Yesterday I participated in another sponsored, group ride - by Habitat for Humanity. But feeling unprepared for the 62 mile route I opted to begin at Rest Stop #1, twelve miles into the ride, by persuading your mom to drive me to that location. There in a slight drizzling rain I joined hundreds of others, most with their fancy road bicycles and outfits.
About eleven miles into the ride and having just passed the "1 mile to Rest Stop" marker I heard the sound no cyclist wants to hear: pop and sssssss. Back tire was flat. Before I could get off the road a few feet, people were slowing and inquiring, "Are you all right?" Two people stopped. Since I had not packed either a spare tube or pump, Chris - he told me his name - offered his spare tube and together we installed and reinflated the tire quickly. Then I was on my way. I'll leave for now that the same tire suffered a flat moments later... and how that was repaired. More importantly, while reviewing the memory of that ride, I realized that I had been visited by Grace - not the blue-eyed, blond version either. "Chris", whom I will likely not see again, chose to interrupt his ride by doing more than simply offer his sympathy in passing. He sacrificed his time and spare tube for me! Thank you Chris. God bless you Chris; you lived out your name ("Christian", possibly "Christopher") well.
