Monday after Second Sunday
From the Monday Men's group in which I am trying to participate faithfully this question rose: What poses the greatest risk to my being fully present in and preparing for Christmas?
I am at risk of allowing myself to be insensitive to the possibilities of worship while harboring distress and being hung up by the crass commercialization of Christmas. Yes, it is true that the celebration of Christ's birth is not mandated by Scripture. However, the Incarnation of God in Jesus is a hallmark of the Story, our Story, to be sure. The birth narratives and the accounts of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels walking among people point to the incredible conviction of Immanuel - God is with us!
Guide me and us, Holy Spirit, that we discern how we may appropriately treasure the Mystery of your coming among us in the midst of others in their attempts to drum up joy and "good will among men" apart from the shepherd-like wonder of those first Christmas revelers. For in fact having been led to the manger they could not contain their joy!
