Slow Down

A student friend wrote this prayer for himself, then shared it with me.  I pass it to you all for your... slowing down appropriately.

Dear God, I know that I am often kinder when I slow down. I'm less rushed, which means I can find more time for people who need a kind word or a bit of help. I'm less agitated, which means I can listen better when someone needs me to be present. I'm less distracted, which means I can more fully attend to the important tasks in my life. Overall, I'm a more loving person when I'm not always rushing around.

God, I know that there's nothing wrong with being active, and that my life is busy for a reason, but there's no need for it to be crazed. Help me remember that I'm not you: I can't do everything, and you don't expect me to do everything. Help me also to remember that some things may not be able to be completed in time, or completed perfectly, or even completed the way I would like. Help me to remember that saying no to yet another task I cannot possibly complete may mean saying yes to more time with my family, my friends and with you. Help me to take it down a notch, God.

God, help me to slow down so that I can pray more, listen better and love more deeply.
